I just wish they gave better thoughts to the power ups, like instead of the Dragon (who can't give people more power than it's creator as stated years ago in the series) saying "I threw in a little extra" could have unlocked his potential Piccolo could have accessed his God Ki from Kami to make a new form. For Granola I hated that there were only 2 Dragon Balls, sure he had conditions for his power but it felt so unearned and stupid, just like Frieza getting Golden in 4 months like they could have done what they did with Black Frieza and said he trained for years to unlock Golden but the writers just didn't care about time scaling. I also didn't like how beast was unlocked, like Gohan once again slacked on training then just because he was mad again he got this amazing new power, all these power ups feel unearned, blue also felt unearned as it happened off screen and just made Super Saiyan God look weak in comparison when that form was the pinnacle just 1 movie before. Toriyama did such an amazing job setting up Super Saiyan 1 and 2 but after that it feels like the forms mattered more than how they got them but that shouldn't be the case, how Goku got Super Saiyan is iconic, how Gohan got SSJ2 is iconic, SSJ3 and Gohans ultimate are much less iconic because they felt less earned. We didn't see Goku unlock 3 and he had no real push to unlock it he just showed up with it, Gohan had already had his potential unlocked when a kid but then they just unlocked it...again? Don't get me wrong I love those forms but feel they are way less iconic because of those reasons

[so piccolo wish is kind of His own tradition i haven't watched the video] Well in the Manga it was told by namekians that Warrior namekians gather Dragon balls in desperate time of need (gamma 1&2 being equal to Goku and vegeta is a concern also red ribbon army is a menace) So Piccolo just followed his own tradition also that's his dragon (he made shenron atleast his half part kami did) so it wouldn't be unfair (like our scenario to use something that we have to boost ourselves with)

I've always wondered why the humans didn't just make a wish to become saiyans

I don’t mind Piccolo doing it, he only wished for his potential to be unlocked similar to Guru or Elder Kai. Granola tried to cheat to max power for the rest of his life. Piccolo basically just wanted to unleash his CURRENT untapped potential and lacked a Guru or Elder Kai to do it, at least fast enough. Granola skipped right to the end of his life span power. Shows how much more potential Piccolo and especially Gohan have than him. They’re far from done and didn’t need to sacrifice their life span to achieve similar or even greater power. For Orange Piccolo, some think it was a freebie that isn’t Piccolo’s own power, but I don’t think so. Perhaps what Shenron meant by “extra” was just some power Piccolo could unlock even later in his life, but not all of it. So maybe it is all Piccolo’s own potential, but just even more beyond what he could currently achieve. Because potential is something that keeps growing throughout your life in DB. Basically, Ultimate/Yellow/Awakened Piccolo being his current potential limit, Orange Piccolo being power/potential he could achieve sometime later in his life, as a sign of respect from Shenron. I don’t think it’s power Piccolo couldn’t achieve, because Piccolo can obviously continue to get stronger, he didn’t wish for all of his potential the way Granola did. Shenron just gave him a “bit” of his future potential.

Granolah's power was 100% unearned since he wished to be the strongest, but Piccolo? He wholly deserved the transformation and I feel it's a perfect representation of his Namekian heritage Even then, all Piccolo asked for was for his potential to be unlocked, much like how the Grand Elder did to Gohan and Krillin, and how Elder Kai did to Gohan

The difference is piccolo did not wish specifically for orange, shenron gave him that extra power, piccolo only wanted his potential unlocked. Granolah wish to be the strongest in the universe but the limitations of the wish were still there. Those being he was only the strongest in the universe for when the wish was made and only accounted for who was currently in the universe, and it cut his life significantly. It seems to depend in the wording.

Does this mean the Z Fighter Humans could also do this wish since they’ve been training with little results? Tien definitely deserves it!

I think a bit more emphasize should be put on the narrative/thematic aspect of the Granolah arc's wish for power. Its ultimately no different from training for 150 years. I don't disagree with the idea that its cheap to wish for power in a series that's supposedly about training and working to improve. But the thing is that the Granolah arc is a little deeper than that. It's not about the wish being selfish. It's about Granolah throwing his life away in pursuit of vengeance. He wasn't living much of a life with everything, including his vengeance (and closure) taken from him. If Frieza never died and if there were no Dragon Balls he would have trained to defeat Frieza for as long as he was alive to do so. The point is that his wish is him doing what he has already been doing. Throwing his life away. Its only different that its for a specific purpose but he is paying the price regardless. It would've have been no different if he trained to achieve that level cause at this moment its about the "why" and not the "how". You can still argue that he didn't go though the struggle for 150 years so its worth less. But would struggling have made reaching the end with nothing it all, worth anything more? For Gas, he wasn't even the one to make the wish. It was Elec sacrificing Gas' life for his own sake. Elec had been robbing Gas of a real life in order to keep him as a bodyguard. Gas was already giving his life in order to protect Elec and his interests but it was never really his choice in the end no matter what he agreed to. Granolah, on some level, is comfortable with giving away a century and a half because he naturally has a longer lifespan. But with Gas it demonstrates how that can sneak up on you. Gas didn't realize he was dying and no one realized just how much life he had lost until it was too late. He seemed fine a moment ago, but was already dead before the fight started.

It all comes down to being a prodigy or not. All of the Z warriors are prodigies in their own right but lack the proper guidance or motivation to reach their full potential which is probably immense, while Granolah is just a random space pirate that could probably not even compete with Turles at that point, which essentialy makes him hundreds if not thousand of times weaker than even Roshi, Krillin and Tien (after the TOP of course). Since Granolah had no potential and could only get stronger by training for 150 years well....his outcome was of course very much different from someone with incomprehensebly high potential such as Piccolo.

I just think it depends on how each Dragon would handle the wish within their own power. Like if Granola wished on say the Super Namekian Dragon he could have been made a god and surpass the mortal limitations.

I like to headcanon that Gohans human side plays a part by heightening his emotions to the extremes, something saiyans may not have had due to their biology, allowing him to pour more emotion and power into his transformation

Both powers are extremely unearned, and that's my problem with them. Man, I love Piccolo, Goku and him are my favorite characters, but come on, if that's the way he got strong, I'd have preferred if he never got that power up at all.

I will say like the gimmick of Toranbo is he has a sort of monkey's paw to his wishes at the very least the "strongest in the universe" and it plays in to his and Gas' selfishness to wishing to be stronger.

gronola getting so strong by dping nothing would have been far more dramatic if his life was shortened even further, for us 3 more years makes it less impactful if it also is more then enough time to reach his goal of beating the sayians and freeza. why not a few weeks?

Also, when Torenbo(forgot the dragons name) was explaining the wish to Granolah, he talked about the training amount in exchange for life. Likely, the power was if Granola trained only by himself for the 150 years and not with a partner. So Granola"s wish could be stated as even worse since training with a partner exponentially increases growth in Dragon Ball, especially if the partner is of similar or higher power.

It only just dawned on me ... Had the wish to destroy the saiyans been re-worded to "can you destroy their spaceships?", resulting in Vegeta and Nappa suffocating in space might of worked considering Shenron removed the bombs from the androids who are far beyond saiyan saga tier characters. Shenron, I don't even need to make a wish to prove you're a plot hole :P

They could’ve made it a lesson of gaining power not equating to skill. By logic just because you’re the strongest doesn’t mean you can automatically beat the best fighter. But it’s dragon ball not logic ball so I digress

why did no one think to wish for this in the 3 years before the androids? Sure it wouldn’t be in Goku’s or Vegeta’s characters to do that, but I don’t think it’d be out of character for most of the humans, especially if they knew they were going to die against the androids.

I don't hate it. At long as it either only take you to a natural/logical limit (like being on your prime if you are super old) or coming at a hyper steep cost.
